We usually talk about Halloween events at this time of year, but we this October seems to be geared more towards the musical side of things, with a little bit of spooky thrown in for fun. Milan is a lovely village that is surrounded by other towns and cities that offer all kinds of great entertainment – making it easy to stay here in quiet and comfort and rove out to other spots for dining, theater, and more.
A very musical weekend is coming up soon. On Friday, October 16th, JAZZ GETS SPOOKY at the Sandusky State Theater. At 8:00 pm, Michael Shirtz & TRIO NOT will put on a great show with a nod to Halloween – playing standards such as “I Put A Spell On You,” and “Old Devil Moon”as well as new compositions like “Poor, Lizzie (Borden)”. Tickets are only $10 for this night of Jazz, and are available through the theater box office.
The same spot hosts the Firelands Symphony Orchestra the following evening, Saturday October 17th at 7:30pm. The program is “All Tchaikovsky” and promises to be quite a powerful performance of pieces from “Suite from Sleeping Beauty”, and “Romeo and Juliet”. As a very special treat, Louis Zou (whom you may have heard on NPR), the 15 year old prodigy, will perform Piano Concerto #1. Tickets for the performance are $22-$25 for adults and $6 for students, and are also available from the theater box office.
On Sunday, October 18th, head over to Bellevue for TrueNorth Cultural Arts’ presentation of “Big Fish, the Musical” at the French Creek Nature Center. Many people have seen Big Fish, the movie starring Ewan McGregor, but the musical brings the pathos of the story closer to home. A son has heard the amazing tales of his father’s life since he was a child, and now as his father fades away from cancer, he must reconcile the truth with the fantastical fiction he had believed. Tickets are $10-$18 and are available here. The show runs October 16 through November 1, 2015.
