2016 Events in Northern Ohio
Some people might ask, “Why would I want to go to Northern Ohio?”. Well, if you have never been here, that might be a good question, and we will continue to answer it through these posts.
In early May, the Biggest Week in American Birding takes place from the 6-15th. It’s a BIG week, 10 days long, all here in Northwest Ohio. There is no better place in North America to witness the spring migration of songbirds. You will see over 20 varieties of warblers, such as the American Redstart, Black-and-white Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler,
Blackpoll Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green
Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Canada Warbler, and many more! You ‘ll also have the chance to see swans, herons and egrets.
The festival headquarters is at Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference
Center, with additional vendors and activities at Black Swamp Bird
Observatory, including Optics Alley and the Marketplace, as well as the workshops, programs and speeches. There will be several guided trips and guided walks each day, with special guides to help you, especially if you are a new birder. These trips will take place at Maumee Bay Lodge, Magee Marsh East End, Pearson Metropark, Sheldon Marsh, Black Swamp, East Harbor State park and Ottawa Refuge. Some of the events are included in the price of registration, but many require additional funds, check the official schedule for more information.
The Biggest Week also offers some free public events, including Family Bird Walk, Beginner Workshops and access to the marketplace.
