The sun has started to peek in on us from time to time and we are ready to welcome the warmer weather and sunny-day events that are coming up. Since Memorial Day weekend has become the unofficial start of summer, we feel like sharing a few things to do near Milan that will help usher in the beginning of summer 2023 – may it be the best summer in the last 3 years!
Ohio Bike Week starts off with a VROOM! “10 Days of Ridin’ and Rockin’ on the Shores of Lake Erie” begins May 26. Sponsored by Mad River Harley Davidson and Progressive, riders can take part in rides, vendors, HD Factory Demos, and live music every day at Barrel House Saloon. All this takes place in Sandusky – and if your riding style is more mild than wild, head back to Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast for a good night’s sleep and a delicious homemade breakfast!
Perry’s Memorial will host a May Carronade Weekend, starting May 27th, Historic firearms demonstrations and shooting of the carronade (a powerful, short barrel gun used by the American fleet during the Battle of Lake Erie) by park rangers and volunteers will take place on the weekend, on the hour, from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Noon – 4pm on Sunday.
In a more somber service, Perry’s Memorial at Put In Bay will hold a Memorial Day Salute to the Troops ceremony on the steps of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial at 10am on May 29, 2023. There will be a speech and and a wreath-laying at the grave site of the fallen officers from the Battle of Lake Erie in the Memorial Rotunda.
Fort Clinton is getting into the summer vibe with the 42nd Annual Walleye Festival! Running May 25-29th, the festival will be held at Waterworks Park on the shores of beautiful Lake Erie. This family festival has it all – a grand parade, kid’s fishing derby, Walleye 5K run, live entertainment, carnival rides and games, educational programs, activities, delicious food and beverages, and over 130 craft and gift vendors from all around the US. If you love a festival, you won’t want to miss this one!
For an event a little closer to home here in Milan, the The Culinary Vegetable Institute will kick off Memorial Day Weekend with David Olson of Live Fire Republic for a limited-seating Outdoor Culinary Adventure! On May 26th, from 6-10pm, enjoy a cocktail reception, followed by dining on food prepared over an open fire – the perfect way to kick off summer! Tickets are $150 per person and include one cocktail and dinner (must be purchased in advance). A cash bar will be available.
