If you’re visiting our area around Milain Ohio in the summer, you might be drawn by history, or water sports, maybe just a relaxing getaway from the daily grind. If you come around the middle of August, you can take part in some uniquely Ohio things to do. Make a weekend of it, or stay for a week, with plenty of realxation time in between your activities. Here’s a fun list of events (mostly free!) you can only do around here in August!
History and Summer Fun on Ohio’s Shores and Islands
Take a tour of Gibraltar Island, named after its resenblance to the British Outpost. Start by heading to the Boardwalk Restaurant in Put-in-Bay. You’ll want to get there early, as the tours are 10 people each and it’s first come, first served. You’ll take a fun water taxi ride over to the island. Once there, set out on your tour. You’ll see Perry’s Lookout and Cooke Castle, and hear the history of this once-private island, then learn about the Ohio Sea Grant College Progam. Lunch at the Boardwalk is a treat – add some extra time for that!
Times: Through August 17 – 10am – 12pm and again at 1pm – 3pm – arrive at the dock 15 minutes before your tour time
Cost: $8 per person for the water taxi (round trip, pay driver), then $12 per adult, $6 per child for the tour
Also on Thursdays, Vermilion hosts its 3rd Thursday Music and a Sunset Concert. Downtown Vermilion becomes a musical dream, with a dozen or more bands and musical acts performing in different spots. Plentious parking makes it easy, then just stroll, shop, snack, or bring lawn chairs to relax and enjoy the scene while you take in the beautiful sunset over Lake Erie.
Times: Recurring monthly on the 3rd Thursday – 5pm- Sunset
Cost: No charge for entry, bring money for shopping and food
Start your Saturday with a leisurely guided canoe tour of Old Woman Creek Barrier Beach. You MUST call (419) 433-4601 to register well in advance, as the tours fill up quickly. Borrow a canoe from OWC (partner registration required) or bring your own canoe or kayak.
Time: Saturday, August 18, 2024 – 9-11am
Cost: No cost to register, advance registration required
Also in Huron is Boppin’ on the Basin, a fun evening concert at the Huron Boat Basin & Amphitheater. Starting at 7pm on Saturday evening, bring lawn chairs or a blanket for the ampitheater seating, to be entertained by musical acts while overlookign the marina on the Huron River.
Time: Saturdays in August, 2024, starting at 7pm
Cost: No charge
If you enjoy your sports with a side of history, you will enjoy watching the Spiegel Grove Squires play baseball the way it was back in the 1860s. Many games are played in Fremont, on the lawn behind the Hayes home at the Rutherford B Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, as well as other venues througout Ohio. “The Squires are volunteers who have studied and learned the methods of play used in the 1860s, including playing bare-handed. Players are called ballists, and they wear period-style uniforms and adopt the language of 19th-century base ball during their matches, as games were called during the 1860s.”

Want some unseasonable chills with your summer activities? Make you way to Lake Erie’s South Bass Island and the Haunted Put-in-Bay Walks on Sunday evenings at Put-in-Bay. Local historian and author William G. Krejci leads a tour of haunted hotels, ghostly taverns, and enchanted waters, leading to a spine-tingling finale!
Time: Select Sunday evenings at the front deck of Topsy Turvey’s Bar & Grill – check schedule for exact time
Cost: $15 Per person. Children 12 yrs. and under are free. Payment is cash only, tickets go on sale on hour prioer to tour start.
