Hey bird lovers! We’re always sharing fun local events near our inn, but today we’re chirping about something extra special: the Biggest Week in American Birding! If you’re passionate about ornithology (or just enjoy watching our feathered friends), this 10-day extravaganza is a must-do.
It’s happening about an hour away from us, at Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center in Oregon, MI, and the Black Swamp Bird Observatory in Oak Harbor. Trust us, it’s worth the drive!
Here’s the scoop:
- Kick-off: Registration opens on the afternoon of May 8th. The birding bonanza officially starts the next morning (May 9th) with a flight count from 6:30-9:30 am.
- Non-stop action: Get ready for ten days packed with guided trips (ten offered every day!), self-guided tours, workshops on everything from photography to bird identification, and fascinating presentations by top birding experts. There are even special activities just for kids!
- Birder’s Banquet: On Wednesday, May 14th, treat yourself to the Birder’s Banquet at the conference center. Enjoy cocktails overlooking beautiful Lake Erie (cash bar), a delicious plated dinner (with options for dietary needs), the Conservation Service Award presentation, and a keynote address by Kenn and Kimberly Kaufman! No need to dress up after a long day of birding – casual attire is perfectly fine.
- Fun extras: Test your knowledge in the trivia contest, admire (or show off!) some awesome birding tattoos, and explore the Birder’s Marketplace (open May 9th-17th, 3-8 pm). You’ll find all sorts of bird- and nature-related goodies, from optics and gear to crafts and apparel.
- Evening Socials: Wind down each day with refreshments, giveaways, and fellow bird enthusiasts at the evening socials from 5-7 pm.
Whether you can make it for the whole event or just a few days, be sure to register so you don’t miss out on any of the special sessions. And if you’re looking for a peaceful place to relax after a day of birding excitement, Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast is just an hour’s drive from all the venues. Come stay with us and enjoy a tranquil evening!
